Camping power supply and extension cables for camping - What do you need?

Power supply when camping and power distribution at the campsite is an important topic especially for camping newbies and some tricky questions may arise about the right camping equipment for power supply at the campsite. Whether you are a newcomer or a camping veteran, brennenstuhl® provides information on the topic of electricity when camping and offers the optimal products for power supply when camping.

How to get electricity at the campsite?

brennenstuhl® camping power supplyHow do I get electricity in the camper and caravan? Kitchen appliances such as stove, refrigerator kettle, toaster, but also entertainment electronics need electricity to function. At the campsite, the power supply is provided by distribution boards. These are often found in the immediate vicinity of the pitches. Partially, sockets can also be found directly at the pitch.

In the power distribution board at the camping there are usually two types of power connections. These are on the one hand CEE 230 V connections (colloquially also known as camping connection) as well as protective contact connections, as you know them from home.

Which plug do you need on the camping site?

With the protective contact connections the function is given, as one knows it from usual household plug sockets and plugs. The CEE 230 V connections at the camping site are only suitable for corresponding CEE 230 V plugs.

The advantage of the blue CEE plug is that it is designed for permanent use. This can also be seen from the three long contact pins, which also ensure that the contacts are held securely. The CEE 230 V plug promises continuous currents up to 16 A and extra safe use. The cover corresponds to the protection against foreign bodies and splashing water according to the IP44 protection required in outdoor use.

Which extension lead for camping?

When it comes to cables and extension leads for connecting the power source and the camper van, caravan or caravan, campers must pay attention to a few things regarding the cable quality.

  • According to regulations, the electrical connection between the power supply and the vehicle must be made of a so-called heavy rubber hose line (H07RN-F).
  • By using a rubber cable, it is protected against petrol, oil and other liquids, and it is also considered relatively safe for vehicles to drive over the cable. Furthermore, it is insensitive to weathering, UV radiation and, unlike hard plastic, does not become porous.
  • The right wire diameter of the cable for connecting a caravan or motor home must be at least 2.5 mm² for a rated current of 16 A. A smaller diameter is not permitted for use on outdoor campsites.
  • Cables in signal colours, such as the orange colour in the brennenstuhl® range for power supply at the campsite, ensure more safety and prevent you from overlooking tripping hazards.

Depending on the distance to the power connection when camping, it makes sense to purchase a long cable or an extension in the form of a camping cable drum. However, make sure that you always lay out the extension cable completely and unroll a cable drum completely. This is the only way to protect yourself from the risk of fire if you use a lot of electricity.

If the distribution board to the caravan or camper is in your immediate vicinity, then it would be more suitable to use a shorter extension cable. In the best case, you have both products at hand and are thus equipped for both situations.
