Power supply for caravans with the right CEE cable
How Power Supply Works for Caravans, Campers and Motorhomes
After parking the vehicle at a motorhome or campsite pitch, connecting it to the campsite's power supply is usually one of the first tasks. This so-called shore power connection allows you to operate 230 V appliances in the vehicle and—depending on the onboard electrical system—to charge the leisure battery as well.
Special safety requirements apply to electrical power supplies at campsites. The electrical infrastructure of campsites is regulated, among other standards, by DIN VDE 0100-708, while the electrical installation in caravans and motor caravans complies with DIN VDE 0100-721.
The Camping CEE Connection
Commonly known as the camping plug, campsites generally use the blue, 3-pin CEE 230V/16A plug. This CEE plug is designed for currents of up to 16 A.
According to regulations, all connectors must be suitable for outdoor use. The IP44 protection rating is the standard for outdoor applications and provides protection against splashing water from all directions.
With brennenstuhl® power solutions for camping vehicles, you can choose between a classic CEE connection and a particularly practical solution: a CEE angled coupling with an integrated safety socket outlet. This allows you not only to connect the vehicle but also to power additional devices directly from the coupling.
The Right Connection Cable for Your Caravan
The cable between the campsite socket outlet and the vehicle connector must be equipped with a CEE plug and a CEE coupling.
The correct CEE cable for connecting a caravan to a campsite power supply must comply with the relevant standards and meet the required requirements for camping power distribution.
- The H07RN-F cable type is a heavy-duty rubber cable. This cable type, or an equivalent cable, is commonly used for supplying power to caravans and motorhomes while camping.
- The connection cable must have a minimum conductor cross-section of 2.5 mm².
- For safety reasons, the cable length should not exceed a maximum of 25 m (+/- 2 m).
Orange Camping Power Cables for Greater Safety
Camping cables in highly visible signal colours such as orange provide additional safety at the campsite. Their bright colour makes them much easier to spot on paths, grass or between the vehicle and the power pedestal. This reduces the risk of tripping hazards and helps prevent damage caused by accidentally running over or overlooking the cable.
LED Voltage Indicator: Check the Campsite Power Supply at a Glance
A particularly practical feature is the integrated LED voltage indicator on both the CEE plug and the CEE coupling. This allows campers to immediately see whether the campsite power supply at the electrical hook-up point is live. At the same time, the LED indicator makes troubleshooting much easier—for example, if a circuit breaker has tripped or no power is available at the pitch.
This feature is integrated into the brennenstuhl® camping cable reel as well as the orange camping extension cables.
