brennenstuhl® extension leads since 1984

brennenstuhl® has been developing extension leads and power distribution solutions since 1984. Over the decades, the range has developed from classic multi-socket extension leads into a wide selection of solutions for the home, office, workshop and other applications.

Today, brennenstuhl® extension leads are available with features such as switching functions, USB and USB-C charging, surge protection, mounting options and specialist designs for different applications. Quality, safety and reliable power distribution remain central to the development of the range.

Extension leads for every application

An extension lead makes it easy to power several electrical devices from a single wall socket. Whether you need a compact multi-socket extension lead, a switched extension lead for your desk, a model with USB-C or a surge protected extension lead for valuable electronics, brennenstuhl® offers solutions for a wide range of applications.

Depending on where and how it will be used, extension leads differ in the number and arrangement of sockets, cable length, mounting options and additional features. The range includes switched and individually switched models, extension leads with USB and USB-C, wall mounted solutions, tower and cube designs, as well as extension leads with surge protection.

Choosing the right extension lead therefore depends not only on how many sockets you need, but also on the devices you want to connect, the available space and any additional functions required.

Extension lead guide:

Which extension lead is right for me?

The right extension lead depends on the application, the number of sockets required and the features you need. These examples can help you choose a suitable solution:

  • TV, gaming and valuable electronics: A surge protected extension lead can provide additional protection for sensitive electrical equipment against voltage spikes. Depending on the model, additional features such as USB charging or switching functions may also be available.
  • Desk and home office: Premium-Office-Line, Alu-Office-Line and Desktop-Power solutions provide easily accessible power and charging connections directly at the workplace. Depending on the model, USB-A, USB-C or Power Delivery may also be available. Further ideas for organising power at your desk are covered in Extension leads for the home office.
  • Kitchen and worktops: Tower-Power and selected brennenstuhl®estilo solutions bring sockets and charging connections directly to or into the work surface while making efficient use of the available space.
  • Limited space: Compact designs and suitable plug shapes can be useful behind furniture or wherever space around the wall socket is restricted.
  • Large plugs and power supplies: When several bulky plugs or power adapters are used, pay attention to the spacing and arrangement of the sockets so that neighbouring outlets remain accessible.
  • Devices you want to control separately: An individually switched extension lead allows individual sockets to be turned on and off independently instead of switching every connected device at once.
  • Wall, workbench or furniture mounting: Mountable extension leads can provide easily accessible sockets while keeping the power supply organised. Different mounting options are explained in Extension lead for wall mounting.
  • Outdoor use: For gardens, patios and other outdoor areas, choose an extension lead specifically designed for the intended conditions and with a suitable IP rating. Suitable solutions and protection requirements are covered in Outdoor extension leads.

How many sockets do I need on an extension lead?

Extension leads are available with different numbers of sockets, from compact models for just a few devices to larger multi-socket solutions. Depending on the model, common configurations include 4-way, 6-way, 8-way, 10-way and 12-way extension leads. Terms such as 4-gang, 6-gang or 8-gang extension lead are also used for multi-socket solutions.

The right number of sockets depends on how many devices you need to connect and how much space is available. For a desk or home office, a compact extension lead may be sufficient, while larger setups with monitors, chargers, speakers or other equipment may require more sockets.

However, the number of available sockets does not determine how many high-powered devices can safely be used at the same time. The combined power consumption of all connected equipment must remain within the maximum electrical load specified for the individual extension lead.

Practical examples for calculating the total load are provided in Maximum load of an extension lead.

What cable length should I choose for an extension lead?

The right extension lead cable length depends on the distance between the wall socket and the devices you want to power. A shorter lead can be practical for desks and nearby equipment, while a 2m, 3m or 5m extension lead may provide more flexibility when the socket is further away.

Choose a cable that comfortably reaches the intended location without being stretched, trapped or creating unnecessary excess cable. The lead should also be positioned so that it does not create a trip hazard or become mechanically damaged.

When is a long extension lead useful?

A long extension lead can be useful when several sockets are required at a location further away from the wall socket. Before choosing a longer model, consider not only the cable length but also the number of sockets required, the connected devices and the maximum electrical load of the product.

For substantially longer distances, especially where only one connection is required or power needs to be supplied over a larger area, an extension cable or cable reel may be more suitable than a multi-socket extension lead.

What types of extension leads are available?

Extension leads are available in a wide range of designs for different applications. In addition to classic multi-socket models, brennenstuhl® offers switched, individually switched, wall mounted, desktop, tower, smart and surge protected extension leads, as well as specialist solutions for worktops and server racks.

Switched extension leads

A switched extension lead allows all connected devices to be turned on or off together. This can be useful at a desk, in a living room or wherever several devices are normally used at the same time.

Depending on the model, switching functions can also make it easier to control an extension lead positioned in a less accessible location.

How switching connected devices can help reduce unnecessary standby consumption is explained in Save electricity with extension leads with switch.

Individually switched extension leads

With an individually switched extension lead, individual sockets can be controlled separately. This makes it possible to switch off one device without interrupting the power supply to other connected equipment.

Separate socket control can be particularly useful for home offices, gaming setups and workstations where monitors, printers, chargers or other devices are not always required at the same time.

The benefits and typical applications of this design are described in Individually switchable extension leads.

Wall mounted extension leads

A wall mounted extension lead can provide permanent, easily accessible sockets at a workbench, desk, kitchen worktop or other fixed location. Depending on the model, mounting points allow the extension lead to be attached to a wall, furniture or another suitable surface.

Different mounting methods and suitable designs are covered in Extension lead for wall mounting.

Desktop and office extension leads

Desktop extension leads bring power and charging connections directly to the workplace. Product ranges such as Premium-Office-Line, Alu-Office-Line and Desktop-Power are designed to keep sockets within easy reach on or around a desk.

Depending on the model, additional USB-A or USB-C charging ports may also be available. Further workplace solutions are shown in Extension leads for the home office.

Tower and cube extension leads

A tower extension lead or cube extension lead provides several sockets in a compact design, often arranged on different sides. This can make plugs easier to access and helps use desk or worktop space efficiently.

Tower and cube designs are particularly useful for shared workspaces, desks and other locations where several devices need to be connected close together.

For a permanently integrated solution, Tower-Power can be installed in a work surface and retracted when it is not required. Its design and installation options are explained in brennenstuhl® Tower-Power – retractable extension lead for installation.

Corner extension leads for kitchens and worktops

A corner extension lead makes efficient use of the space between a wall and a worktop. Selected brennenstuhl®estilo solutions can be mounted horizontally or vertically and are suitable for applications such as kitchens, offices and workspaces.

Mounting and use on kitchen and work surfaces are described in brennenstuhl®estilo corner extension lead for kitchen and work surfaces.

Main-Follow extension leads

A Main-Follow extension lead, also commonly known as a master-slave extension lead, can automatically control several connected devices based on the operating status of one main device.

When the device connected to the Main socket is switched on, connected Follow devices can be activated automatically. When the main device is switched off, the Follow sockets are switched accordingly.

The automatic switching principle is explained in Main-Follow extension lead with automatic switching.

Smart extension leads

A smart extension lead can be integrated into a compatible WiFi network and controlled using an app or supported voice control. Depending on the model, functions such as remote switching, timers and schedules can provide more flexible control of connected devices.

The available control options are described in Smart WiFi power strip from brennenstuhl®Connect.

Extension leads for server racks

Specialist extension leads are also available for network, server and control cabinets. Depending on the model, rack-mountable designs provide multiple power outlets in a compact format. The UK extension lead range also includes products suitable for 19-inch rack mounting.

Extension leads with USB and USB-C

An extension lead with USB combines mains sockets with additional charging ports for smartphones, tablets and other USB devices. This can reduce the need for separate plug-in chargers and keeps power and charging connections in one place.

Depending on the model, brennenstuhl® extension leads are available with USB-A, USB-C or a combination of both. Selected models also support USB-C Power Delivery, allowing compatible devices to use higher charging power.

USB extension leads are particularly useful at desks, in home offices, kitchens and other areas where several devices need power and charging access close together. Depending on the product, additional features such as surge protection, switching or mounting options may also be available.

Surge protected extension leads

A surge protected extension lead can help protect connected electrical equipment from short-term voltage spikes. This can be particularly useful for sensitive or valuable devices such as computers, televisions, gaming equipment, audio systems and network hardware.

brennenstuhl® offers surge protected extension leads with different protection specifications. Depending on the model, additional features can include USB charging, USB-C Power Delivery, interference suppression filters, switches or mounting options.

Are surge protected extension leads worth it?

For sensitive or valuable electronics, a surge protected extension lead can provide an additional level of protection against voltage spikes. It should be regarded as one part of an appropriate surge protection concept rather than a substitute for all other protective measures.

The causes of overvoltage and the basic principles of protecting electrical equipment are explained in What is overvoltage protection and why is it so important?.

What does the surge current rating mean?

The maximum surge current is one of the technical specifications used to describe the surge protection of an extension lead. The appropriate product depends on the equipment being protected and the specification of the individual extension lead.

The differences between surge current ratings are explained in Surge currents for extension leads.

What does an interference suppression filter do?

Some surge protected extension leads also include an interference suppression filter. This can help reduce high-frequency interference that may affect connected electronic equipment.

The function of these filters is explained in How do interference suppression filters work in an extension lead?.

What should I look for when buying an extension lead?

The best extension lead for your requirements depends on where it will be used, which devices need to be connected and which additional features are required. Important factors include socket arrangement, cable length, switching options, USB charging, surge protection, mounting and the maximum electrical load of the individual product.

Check the socket arrangement

If large plugs or power adapters are used, make sure there is enough space between the sockets. A suitable socket arrangement helps prevent bulky plugs from blocking neighbouring outlets.

Switched or individually switched?

A switched extension lead allows several connected devices to be turned on or off together. If different devices need to be controlled independently, an individually switched extension lead may be more suitable.

Do I need USB or USB-C?

An extension lead with USB can combine mains power and charging connections in one place. Depending on the model, USB-A, USB-C or USB-C Power Delivery may be available. Check the charging specification against the devices you intend to connect.

Does the extension lead need surge protection?

For sensitive or valuable electronics, a surge protected extension lead can provide additional protection against short-term voltage spikes. The required protection depends on the connected equipment and the specification of the individual product.

Will the extension lead be used indoors or outdoors?

Extension leads designed for normal indoor use should not automatically be used outside. For gardens, patios and other outdoor environments, choose a product specifically designed for the intended conditions and with an appropriate IP rating.

Check the maximum electrical load

The combined power consumption of all devices used at the same time must remain within the maximum electrical load specified for the individual extension lead. The number of available sockets does not increase the maximum amount of power that can safely be drawn through the product.

How the total load of several connected devices can be calculated is explained in Maximum load of an extension lead.

Choose an extension lead suitable for the application

There is no single extension lead that is the safest or best choice for every application. The important factors are choosing a product suitable for the environment and electrical load, using it as intended and checking the cable, plug, housing and sockets for damage before use.

Additional information on the protective mechanism used in socket outlets is available under Increased contact protection for extension leads.

The ranges differ in features such as housing design, number and arrangement of sockets, mounting options, USB charging, surge protection and switching functions. Which range is most suitable therefore depends on where and how the extension lead will be used.

Frequently asked questions about extension leads

What should never be plugged into an extension lead?

High-powered appliances require particular care when used with an extension lead. The combined electrical load of all connected devices must never exceed the maximum load specified for the individual extension lead. For appliances with a high power demand, the manufacturer's instructions should also be checked to determine whether direct connection to a wall socket is required.

How many sockets can you safely use on an extension lead?

The number of sockets alone does not determine whether an extension lead is safe to use. What matters is the combined power consumption of all devices operating at the same time. This must remain within the maximum electrical load specified for the individual product.

Can you plug an extension lead into another extension lead?

Extension leads should not be connected one after another. Daisy chaining creates additional connections without increasing the maximum electrical capacity of the supply and can increase the risk of overheating or overloading.

The reasons for avoiding this setup are explained in Why you should not connect several extension leads together.

Are extension leads safe?

Extension leads can be used safely when the correct product is chosen and used as intended. The extension lead should be suitable for the environment, remain within its stated maximum electrical load and be kept in good condition.

Damaged cables, plugs, housings or sockets should not be used. Extension leads should also not be covered or positioned in a way that can cause heat to build up.

Can an extension lead overheat?

An extension lead can become excessively warm if it is overloaded, damaged or used in a way that prevents heat from dissipating. Signs such as unusual heat, discolouration, a burning smell or crackling noises should not be ignored.

If an extension lead becomes unusually hot or shows signs of damage, disconnect it from the mains and stop using it.

Are switched extension leads better?

A switched extension lead is useful when several connected devices need to be turned on or off together. This can improve convenience and may help reduce unnecessary standby consumption when connected devices are disconnected from the power supply.

An individually switched extension lead provides greater flexibility where some devices need to remain powered while others are switched off. The relationship between switching and standby consumption is explained in Save electricity with extension leads with switch.

Do extension leads use electricity?

A basic extension lead without electronic functions primarily distributes power to the connected devices. Models with additional electronic features, such as USB charging, smart controls or automatic switching functions, may have a model-dependent power consumption of their own.

The overall electricity use is also influenced by the devices connected to the extension lead, particularly if they continue to consume power in standby mode.

Are surge protected extension leads worth it?

For sensitive or valuable electrical equipment, a surge protected extension lead can provide additional protection against short-term voltage spikes. Whether surge protection is required depends on the equipment being protected and the individual application.

The underlying protection principle is explained in What is overvoltage protection and why is it so important?.

What is the difference between an extension cord and an extension lead?

The terms are often used for similar products, but extension lead is the more common term in British English, while extension cord is more widely used in American English.

Within the brennenstuhl® range, it is also useful to distinguish between multi-socket extension leads, extension cables designed primarily to extend a single connection and cable reels intended for longer distances or different applications.

Can extension leads be used outdoors?

Only extension leads specifically designed for outdoor use should be used in gardens, patios or other exposed environments. The required IP rating and product design depend on the conditions in which the extension lead will be used.

Suitable products and protection requirements are described in Outdoor extension leads.
