Which surge protection product is right for me?
Surge protection products are available in different designs, from compact plug-in adapters for a single device to multi-socket extension leads for complete computer, entertainment or workplace setups. Which solution is right for you depends mainly on how many devices you want to protect, how the equipment is used and which additional functions are useful in your setup.
The surge protection rating is an important factor, but it should not be the only one. The number and arrangement of sockets, cable length, switching functions, USB charging, mounting options and interference suppression can all influence which product is most suitable.
When is a surge protection adapter useful?
A surge protection adapter is a compact solution when a single electrical device needs additional protection against short-term voltage spikes. The adapter is connected directly between the mains socket and the device, making it suitable where no additional socket outlets are required.
This can be a practical option for individual appliances or electronic devices that are used separately. If several devices need to be protected in the same location, a surge protected extension lead is usually more convenient.
When should I choose a surge protected extension lead?
A surge protected extension lead combines several socket outlets with integrated protection against short-term voltage spikes. It is particularly useful when several related devices are located close together, such as a computer with monitors and peripherals or a television with gaming and audio equipment.
When choosing a model, consider how many sockets are actually required and whether larger plugs or power supplies need additional space. The combined electrical load of all connected devices must also remain within the maximum load specified for the individual extension lead.
Which surge protection is suitable for valuable electronics?
For valuable, sensitive or difficult-to-replace electronics, it can be worth considering an extension lead with a more comprehensive surge protection specification. Computers, televisions, gaming systems, audio equipment and network devices are typical examples of equipment for which additional protection may be useful.
Surge protected extension leads are available with different maximum surge current ratings. A higher rating indicates a higher specified surge current capacity of the protective circuit, but the complete product specification should always be considered rather than choosing solely by the highest ampere value.
The different ratings and what they mean are explained in Surge current ratings for extension leads.
Which surge protection is suitable for a desk or home office?
A desk or home office often contains several electronic devices in a relatively small area. In addition to surge protection, easy access to sockets and charging connections can therefore be important. Depending on the setup, a desktop extension lead with USB or USB-C charging can reduce the number of separate chargers required and keep frequently used connections within reach.
If most equipment remains permanently connected, a mountable extension lead underneath or alongside the desk may be more suitable. The best solution depends on whether the sockets need to remain easily accessible or whether keeping cables away from the work surface is the priority.
Which surge protection is suitable for TV, gaming and home entertainment?
Entertainment setups can include a television, game console, receiver, sound system, streaming equipment and network devices. A surge protected extension lead allows these related devices to be connected from one location while providing additional protection against voltage spikes.
If the equipment is normally used together, switching functions can also be useful. Selected extension leads provide Main-Follow control, where the operating status of one main device automatically controls associated sockets. For setups containing sensitive audio or video equipment, an interference suppression filter may also be worth considering.
When is an interference suppression filter useful?
An interference suppression filter performs a different function from surge protection. While surge protection is intended to limit short-term voltage peaks, an EMI/RFI filter reduces high-frequency electrical interference that may affect sensitive electronic equipment.
Not every surge protected extension lead includes this feature. If interference suppression is relevant to your setup, check the technical specification of the individual product. More information is available in Interference suppression filters in extension leads.
Do I need USB or USB-C on a surge protected extension lead?
Integrated USB charging can be useful where smartphones, tablets or other USB devices are regularly charged alongside mains-powered equipment. Depending on the model, USB-A, USB-C or USB-C Power Delivery may be available.
USB connections are therefore primarily a convenience feature and should be selected according to the devices you actually charge. The charging type and output depend on the individual extension lead and should be checked in the product specification.
Which surge protection is suitable when space is limited?
Where an extension lead needs to be positioned underneath a desk, alongside furniture or on a wall, the housing design, cable entry and mounting options can be just as important as the surge protection itself. A mountable extension lead can keep sockets in a fixed position and reduce loose equipment on the floor or work surface.
Different fastening options and suitable applications are explained in Wall mounted extension leads.
Should I choose Premium-Protect-Line?
The brennenstuhl® Premium-Protect-Line is designed for applications where a high surge protection specification and additional features are required. Depending on the model, the range combines high maximum surge current ratings with features such as interference suppression, USB charging, USB-C Power Delivery or Main-Follow switching.
It can therefore be particularly suitable for setups containing valuable or sensitive electronic equipment. The different versions and features are explained in Premium-Protect-Line surge protected extension leads.
Can a plug-in surge protector protect against every lightning event?
No single plug-in surge protection product should be regarded as protection against every possible electrical event. A surge protected extension lead or adapter is intended to provide device-level protection against short-term voltage spikes within its specified limits and should be considered as one part of an appropriate protection concept.
If a building requires more comprehensive lightning or surge protection, the electrical installation and the applicable protection measures need to be considered as a whole.
What should I compare before choosing a surge protection product?
- Number of devices: Decide whether one device or several devices need protection.
- Surge protection specification: Compare the maximum surge current and the overall protection concept of the product.
- Number and arrangement of sockets: Make sure all required plugs and power supplies fit comfortably.
- Cable length: Choose a length suitable for the intended position without unnecessary tension or excess cable.
- Switching functions: Consider whether a conventional switch, individual control or Main-Follow function is useful.
- USB charging: Check whether USB-A, USB-C or Power Delivery is required.
- Interference suppression: Consider whether sensitive audio, video or computer equipment may benefit from an EMI/RFI filter.
- Mounting: Decide whether the extension lead needs to be fixed to a wall, desk or work surface.
- Maximum electrical load: The combined power consumption of all connected devices must remain within the rating specified for the product.
Which surge protection solution should I choose?
If you only need to protect one device, a surge protection adapter can provide a compact solution. If several devices are located together, a surge protected extension lead usually offers greater convenience. For sensitive or valuable electronics, compare the protection specification and consider additional functions such as interference suppression, Main-Follow or USB charging where they provide a genuine benefit.
The right surge protection product is therefore not simply the model with the highest technical value or the most functions. It is the product whose protection level, connections and features best match the equipment you actually want to use.
