Outdoor extension leads: what to look for

An outdoor extension lead provides additional socket outlets in gardens, patios, workshops and other areas where electrical devices need to be powered away from an indoor wall socket. However, not every extension lead is suitable for outdoor use. The product must be designed for the intended environment and provide an appropriate degree of protection against moisture, dirt and other external influences.

Which extension lead is suitable for outdoor use?

For outdoor applications, choose an extension lead that is explicitly specified as suitable for the intended conditions. Important product characteristics can include an appropriate IP rating, protected socket outlets, a robust cable and a housing designed for outdoor environments. The right product therefore depends on where the extension lead will be used, how strongly it may be exposed to moisture or dirt, how many sockets are required and which electrical devices will be connected.

Cable length, maximum electrical load and additional features such as switches or mounting options can also play an important role when choosing an outdoor extension lead.

What does IP44 mean for an outdoor extension lead?

The IP rating describes the degree of protection provided by an electrical enclosure against contact, foreign objects and water. With IP44, the first digit indicates protection against solid foreign objects of a defined size, while the second digit indicates protection against splashing water from different directions.

Many extension leads intended for outdoor use are available with IP44 protection. The required degree of protection, however, always depends on the actual conditions in which the product will be used. The different IP ratings and the meaning of the individual digits are explained in IP protection classes: which one is necessary when?.

Is an IP44 extension lead waterproof?

IP44 does not mean that an extension lead is waterproof under all conditions. The rating describes protection against splashing water, not against every possible type of water exposure. An IP44 product should therefore not be immersed in water or treated as though it were completely waterproof. Always use the extension lead according to its specified degree of protection and the manufacturer's instructions.

Can I use an indoor extension lead outside?

An extension lead designed only for indoor use should not automatically be used outdoors. Outdoor environments can expose electrical equipment to moisture, dirt, temperature changes and greater mechanical stress. Instead, select a product that is specifically designed and marked for the intended outdoor application.

What features are useful on an outdoor extension lead?

Depending on the model, outdoor extension leads can include features that make them more suitable for demanding environments. Protected socket outlets with covers can help protect unused sockets against dirt and splashing water, while robust cable types can provide greater resistance to mechanical stress and environmental influences.

Additional features may include switches for controlling connected devices directly at the extension lead, mounting points for fixing the product in a suitable position and different socket configurations depending on the application.

What cable should an outdoor extension lead have?

The cable must be suitable for the conditions in which the extension lead will be used. Outdoor applications can place greater demands on cable insulation and mechanical durability than normal indoor use. Depending on the product and application, robust rubber or rubber-neoprene cables such as H07RN-F may be used.

The cable type should always be checked in the specification of the individual extension lead. The appearance or thickness of a cable alone does not indicate whether it is suitable for outdoor use.

How long should an outdoor extension lead be?

Choose a cable length that comfortably reaches the intended location without being stretched. At the same time, unnecessary excess cable should be avoided where possible so that the cable can be routed safely and does not create avoidable trip hazards or mechanical stress.

If power needs to be supplied over a substantially longer distance, an extension cable or cable reel may be more appropriate than a multi-socket extension lead. The correct solution depends on the required distance, electrical load and intended environment.

Can an outdoor extension lead be mounted on a wall?

Some outdoor extension leads are designed with mounting points that allow them to be fixed to a wall, workbench or another suitable surface. A fixed position can keep sockets easily accessible and prevent the extension lead from lying loose on the ground.

Only use the fastening method intended for the individual product and make sure that mounting does not affect the protection required for the intended environment. More information on different mounting options is available in Wall mounted extension leads.

Can an outdoor extension lead stay outside permanently?

This depends on the specification of the individual product. Some extension leads are designed for more demanding outdoor applications, while others may only be suitable for use under particular conditions. The IP rating alone should therefore not be used to determine whether an extension lead can remain outside permanently.

Always check the product description and operating instructions for the permitted environment and conditions of use.

What is the difference between an outdoor extension lead and a garden socket?

An outdoor extension lead is useful when several electrical devices need to be connected at a flexible location. A garden socket or socket outlet with a ground spike provides another way of distributing power outdoors and can be practical where sockets are regularly required in a particular garden area.

The most suitable solution depends on whether the power distribution needs to remain mobile, where the sockets are required, how many devices need to be connected and which environmental conditions the product will be exposed to.

What can I connect to an outdoor extension lead?

An outdoor extension lead can be used with suitable electrical equipment as long as both the extension lead and the connected devices are appropriate for the intended environment. The combined power consumption of all devices operating at the same time must remain within the maximum electrical load specified for the individual extension lead.

The number of available sockets does not increase the maximum amount of electrical power the extension lead can safely carry. Several connected devices therefore always need to be considered together when assessing the total load.

How can I use an outdoor extension lead safely?

  • Use only a product specified as suitable for the intended outdoor conditions.
  • Check the IP rating and product instructions before use.
  • Keep plugs and connections within the conditions permitted for the product.
  • Do not use damaged plugs, sockets, housings or cables.
  • Do not exceed the maximum electrical load of the extension lead.
  • Do not connect several extension leads one after another.
  • Position cables so that they are not crushed, stretched or exposed to unnecessary mechanical damage.
  • Use socket covers and other protective features as intended.

The right outdoor extension lead therefore depends not only on the number of sockets or cable length, but also on the environmental conditions, the connected equipment and the level of protection required for the intended application.
