Welcome to Brennenstuhl!

What does increased contact protection mean on an extension lead?

Some brennenstuhl® extension leads and socket products are equipped with increased contact protection. This feature uses integrated protective elements in the socket openings to help prevent unintended direct access to the electrical contacts.

If an extension lead is described as having increased contact protection, the protective mechanism is built into the socket itself. The exact design can vary depending on the product and plug system.

How does increased contact protection work?

On suitable socket designs, integrated shutters or plastic elements cover the contact openings when no plug is inserted. When a compatible plug is inserted correctly, the protective mechanism moves so that the plug pins can reach the electrical contacts.

The protection is therefore integrated into the socket and does not normally require separate caps or removable accessories.

What is the purpose of increased contact protection?

The purpose is to make unintended access to live contacts more difficult during normal use. This provides an additional protective feature for socket outlets and extension leads used in homes, offices and other suitable indoor environments.

It is important to understand that increased contact protection is an additional product feature rather than a substitute for correct use of electrical equipment. Extension leads should still be kept in good condition, used within their specified electrical limits and positioned so that they are protected from damage.

Is increased contact protection the same as a child safety device?

Increased contact protection can help reduce the possibility of direct access to the electrical contacts, but it should not be treated as a replacement for supervision or general electrical safety measures around children. The feature is integrated into the socket and is intended to provide additional protection during normal use.

Separate aftermarket inserts or covers should only be used if they are suitable for the socket system and recommended for the intended application. Adding unsuitable accessories can interfere with the correct connection of a plug.

Do all extension leads have increased contact protection?

No. The features of an extension lead depend on the individual product and the plug system for which it is designed. If increased contact protection is important for your application, check the technical specifications of the extension lead before purchasing.

On brennenstuhl® product pages, this feature is listed in the technical data where it applies to the individual model.

What else should I consider when choosing a safe extension lead?

Contact protection is only one aspect of choosing a suitable extension lead. The product should also match the intended environment, provide enough sockets and cable length for the application and be suitable for the electrical load of the connected devices. Features such as surge protection, switching functions or an appropriate IP rating may also be relevant depending on where and how the extension lead will be used.

The number of sockets does not determine how much electrical power can safely be connected. The combined power consumption of all devices must remain within the maximum electrical load specified for the individual extension lead. More information is available in our article on the maximum load of an extension lead.

What should I check before using an extension lead?

Before use, check that the plug, cable, housing and socket outlets are free from visible damage. Plugs should fit correctly into the sockets and the extension lead should not be used if parts are loose, damaged, discoloured or unusually warm during operation.

Increased contact protection can provide an additional safety feature, but safe use always depends on the complete product, its condition and whether it is being used according to its intended purpose.
