Which light colour is recommended for an LED spotlight?

The right light colour or colour temperature for your luminaires and spotlights

The term light colour refers to the colour temperature in the unit Kelvin. The Kelvin value indicates where in the spectrum from yellowish-warm to bluish-cool the light colour of the LED spotlight lies. A distinction is made between three different light colours: Warm white, neutral white and daylight white.

Colour temperature Light colour

Warm white light resembles the colour of a sunset, so it shines in yellow and orange tones. This light colour is recommended for cosy and relaxing situations. Warm white light has a colour temperature below 3300 K.

Neutral white light has no warm or yellowish colour cast compared to warm white light. Contrasts are better visible here and details can be better displayed. Neutral white light is produced by LED spotlights with a colour temperature of 3300 to 5000 K.

Daylight white light This light colour almost corresponds to real daylight. As the colour temperature increases, the light appears increasingly bluish. Daylight white light has a colour temperature of over 5000 K. This light colour is ideally suited as working light, whether in the workshop or on the construction site. In addition, this light stimulates and promotes concentration.

Which specification is relevant: Watts or lumens?

First the light bulb, then the halogen lamp. Just a few years ago, it was very easy to deduce the brightness of a lamp from its wattage. A 15-watt light bulb was less bright than one with 40 watts. In the days of incandescent and halogen lamps, watts were the unit of power used to infer brightness. However, this has changed with LED and energy-saving lamps, as the unit lumen is the important key figure for these light sources.

So now everyone no longer speaks of watts, but of lumens. Lumen (lm) is an internationally standardised unit for luminous flux. Luminous flux is a lighting parameter that measures the actual light output of a light source. The higher the lumen value of an LED spotlight, the brighter the spotlight shines.

LED spotlight instead of halogen spotlight - energy-efficient and environmentally friendly alternative

Since September 2018, halogen lamps have been banned throughout the EU. The aim is to reduce energy consumption, consequently, energy-efficient LED technology is being used. However, both residual and stock halogen spotlights are still being sold.

Replace halogen with LED

Here is a small comparison: a 20 Watt halogen spotlight consumes about as much as an LED spotlight, which consumes about 4 Watts. The energy saving is therefore obvious: at the same brightness, an LED lamp consumes up to 90% less than a halogen lamp.

If you are still struggling with the lumens when buying an LED spotlight, the informative packaging from brennenstuhl® will help you. Luminous flux (lm), efficiency (lm/W) and service life (h) of the LEDs can be seen at first glance.

How many lumens for LED spotlights?

Luminous flux, expressed in lumens (lm), indicates how much light or brightness a light source provides in all directions. This efficiency describes the ratio of emitted luminous flux in lumens and supplied energy in watts. The value is decisive for the brightness of an LED spotlight and describes the light output of the light source.

In the course of the EU regulations for energy-related products, the useful luminous flux (lm) is specified with an angle. The useful luminous flux in lumens (lm) indicates how much light a light source provides at a certain beam angle.

How many watts or lumens for LED spotlights?

With earlier lighting, e.g. incandescent bulbs, the watt specification is familiar. Sometimes still unfamiliar is the lumen specification of the luminous flux. In connection with LED lamps, wattage is still given, but the number of lumens is more meaningful.

To determine the appropriate light output, or the number of lumens required, is crucial:

How maximum the Illuminance at a given distance.

Where and at what height the spotlight is mounted.

The illuminance is given in lux. For example, approx. 10 - 20 lux are needed to illuminate a garage entrance. The illuminance does not decrease linearly over the distance, but quadratically, which means that even at small distances the light becomes considerably weaker.

An example: with vertical incidence of light, a spotlight with 2000 lm and 120° beam angle at a distance of 8 m provides approx. 10 lux.

LED spotlight with motion detector

Automated lighting thanks to LED spotlight with motion detector

Spotlights with a motion detector are not only used for effective burglary protection, but also for energy-saving and automated lighting around the house or in entrance areas. LED spotlights with high colour temperature are recommended here. LED spotlights with motion detectors can be operated time-controlled and are also ideal for retrofitting.

Saving energy with LED spotlights with motion detector

An LED spotlight with motion detector saves energy costs because the detector only activates when movements are detected. When activated, the luminaire immediately reaches maximum luminous flux, i.e. maximum brightness. Otherwise, the LED luminaire is switched off. To ensure that the sensor does not activate the spotlight at the slightest movement, the sensitivity can be adjusted. In this way, you can achieve an automatically triggered lighting in the outdoor area that is adjusted to your needs.

Where is the best place to install wall floodlights with motion detectors?

To ensure that LED spotlights with motion detectors can also be used sensibly as burglary protection, they should be mounted in the right, i.e. burglary-sensitive, locations. This means that the outdoor spotlight with a sensor should not only be installed at entrance areas, but also at places where unwanted guests are forced to sneak past - be it around your garden or driveways. In other words, everywhere where burglars can gain access to your house.

It should also be ensured that the worklight or LED spotlight is mounted at a tamper-proof height, i.e. rather a little higher than too low. It should also be possible to make optimum use of the detection area and angle of coverage.

Setting the motion detector on the LED spotlight

The brennenstuhl® LED spotlight with motion detector can be Coverage and the Angle of coverage distinguish. Often Duty cycle, twilight and sensitivity sensor adjustable.

In general, an LED spotlight with motion detector should be installed exactly where movement is to be detected or monitored. The outdoor spotlight should be mounted in such a way that the detection area and the detection angle can be used optimally. The height at which the LED spotlight with sensor is mounted is also crucial.

To ensure that dogs, cats and mice do not trigger an automatic light, but only human movements are detected, the spotlight with motion detector should be mounted high enough.

The switch-on time can normally be regulated individually. The on-time indicates how long the spotlight with motion detector should be lit as soon as the motion detector has detected a movement.

Tip: The light in the driveway or at the house entrance should stay on until you are safely inside the house. Depending on the distance, you should rather opt for a longer switching time.

LED spotlights outside as protection against burglary?

Brennenstuhl LED SpotlightLED outdoor spotlights with motion detector deter burglars

More than half of the burglaries take place in the evening or at night, because burglars deliberately use the protection of darkness.

But with the right lighting, unwanted intrusion can be prevented. A spotlight with motion detector is suitable for this.

LED wall spotlight

LED outdoor spotlight for perfect illumination outdoors

An LED outdoor floodlight is indispensable in house entrances or courtyard driveways. The brennenstuhl® LED outdoor floodlights have a low power consumption and thus a long service life. The reason for this is the bright LEDs, which can save up to 80% energy.

Which IP protection class for outdoor LED spotlights?

Safe outdoor lighting is indispensable - no matter whether the LED spotlight illuminates your house entrance or provides light in the garden, one thing is clear:

Outdoor spotlights have to withstand wind and weather.

The IP protection class of the LED spotlight is decisive. The outdoor luminaires should not only be protected against possible rainfall, i.e. against moisture, but also against foreign bodies such as dust, dirt or insects.

What does "IP protection class" mean?

"IP" stands for "International Protection" (but often also "Ingress Protection"), which generally stands for protection against the ingress of foreign bodies and water. The IP protection class is made up of two code numbers.

The first digit indicates the protection against solid foreign bodies - the second digit stands for the protection against water.

So the higher the number, the better the protection of your outdoor lighting. Here you can get more Information on IP protection classes.

The most important IP protection classes for outdoor LED spotlights

Brennenstuhl LED spotlight outdoor without motion detector

IP44 Foreign body and splash water protected LED spotlights and worklights that are mounted on the wall of the house or under the roof should meet this protection class. All types of outdoor LED spotlight, wall spotlight, outdoor luminaire or yard lamp require protection class IP44 or higher. IP44 is considered the minimum protection class for outdoor use and is therefore often recommended. The outdoor lighting is then protected against splashing water from all directions, for example.

IP54 Dust and splash-proof This protection class differs only in the first digit, which stands for even higher protection against dust or other foreign bodies; more precisely, there is protection against contact and protection against dust deposits in the interior.

IP65 Dustproof and jet water protected With this protection class, there is complete protection against contact and against the ingress of dust. The protection against water is sufficient against a water jet (nozzle) from any angle.

Tip: LED spotlights outdoors should have at least IP44 protection to protect against rain and dust! All about the IP protection classes you will find in the brennenstuhl® theme world.

Which light colour for LED outdoor floodlights?

Which light colour is suitable for outdoor lighting depends on the respective application and location.

LED spotlights with 3000 Kelvin radiate a warm and atmospheric light colour. This will create a cosy ambience on your terrace or seating area in shades of yellow and orange.

Yard or garage entrances are predestined for optimal illumination. Here it is recommended to use an LED outdoor spotlight with a neutral white to daylight white light colour. A light temperature of 6500 Kelvin corresponds to a cooler light colour and has an amplifying effect like daylight.

How many lumens for outdoor wall floodlights?

To determine the appropriate light output, or the number of lumens required, is crucial:

  • What the maximum illuminance should be at a given distance.
  • Where and at what height the spotlight is to be mounted.

Depending on how large the area to be illuminated is, a higher number of lumens must be selected.

How to install LED outdoor floodlights and wall floodlights correctly?

A power connection should definitely be available for mounting the wall light.

At what height should an outdoor LED spotlight be mounted? Installing outdoor spotlights at the ideal height

There is generally no specification for the height of an outdoor spotlight, but ideally an LED wall luminaire for outdoor use should be mounted at a height of 1.8 to 2.5 metres above the ground.

Above all, you should make sure that the wall luminaire is not mounted at a reachable height. This not only prevents annoying glare because you can no longer look directly into the LEDs, but also prevents possible, undesired disassembly of the wall light.
