Power supply during camping

Camping power supply and extension cables for camping - What do you need at the campsite?

Whether in your home or when travelling with a camper van or caravan: almost nothing works without electricity. Everyday electrical devices, kitchen appliances such as cookers, coffee makers, kettles and toasters, but also entertainment electronics need electricity to function. That's why you should consider the appropriate equipment for the power supply at the camping site before your trip.

brennenstuhl® offers suitable cable drums and extension cables with CEE plugs for camping power supply and answers questions on the subject:

How to get electricity at the campsite?

How do I get electricity for my motorhome, camper, caravan or caravan? At the campsite, electricity is supplied via distribution boxes or electricity pillars. Once the vehicle is upright, the first step is often to supply it with electricity.

The most common type of power supply for camping is CEE. CEE sockets at campsites are usually recognisable by their blue colour.

Which plug do you need on the camping site?

There are usually two types of power connections in the distribution box at the campsite: CEE sockets and earthed wall sockets, as you know them from home.

If there are earthed wall sockets in the power distribution box, the function is the same as that of ordinary household sockets and plugs.

The CEE 230 V sockets in camping are only suitable for corresponding CEE 230 V plugs. The blue CEE plug is known as the caravan or camping plug, as it is ideal for camping or for use in caravans.

Which plug fits on the campsite?

The blue CEE plug (also known as a camping plug) is plugged into the supply station of the campsite and connected to the CEE input socket of the vehicle. As soon as the 3-pin CEE plug is plugged into the blue CEE socket, the vehicle's batteries are conserved and all electrical appliances in the mobile home are supplied with power.

The blue colour indicates the voltage range from 200 V to 250 V. The advantage of the blue CEE plug is that it is designed for permanent use. This can also be seen from the three long contact pins, which also ensure that the contacts are held securely.

The CEE 230 V plug promises continuous currents of up to 16 A and extra safe use. The cover provides protection against foreign bodies and splashing water in accordance with the IP44 protection class required for outdoor use.

Requirements for the Camping Cable

When it comes to cables and extension leads for connecting the power source and the camper van, caravan or caravan, campers must pay attention to a few things regarding the cable quality.

  • According to regulations, the electrical connection between the power supply and the vehicle must be made of a so-called heavy rubber hose line (H07RN-F).
  • By using a rubber cable, it is protected against petrol, oil and other liquids, and it is also considered relatively safe for vehicles to drive over the cable. Furthermore, it is insensitive to weathering, UV radiation and, unlike hard plastic, does not become porous.
  • The right wire diameter of the cable for connecting a caravan or motor home must be at least 2.5 mm² for a rated current of 16 A. A smaller diameter is not permitted for use on outdoor campsites.
  • Cables in signal colours, such as the orange colour in the brennenstuhl® range for power supply at the campsite, ensure more safety and prevent you from overlooking tripping hazards.

Camping Extension Cable or Camping Cable Reel?

Depending on the distance to the power connection when camping, it makes sense to purchase a long cable or an extension in the form of a camping cable reel. However, make sure that you always lay out the extension cable completely and unroll a cable drum completely in order to reduce the risk of fire in the event of high power consumption.

If the camping distributor box is in the immediate vicinity, it is advisable to use a shorter extension cable, e.g. in the form of a camping CEE cable. Ideally, you should have both products at hand and be equipped for both situations.
